The 22nd of October, 1857 is a day in Indian history which marked the start of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. This uprising was against British rule and set out to overthrow them and restore India's sovereignty in an event termed "The First War of Independence". The movie follows the story of Mangal Pandey who is a young sepoy (a soldier) that participated on that fateful day on behalf of Hindustan. From then on, Mangal's life unravels into chaos as intrigue, betrayal and rebellion take over him. He doesn't know who he can trust anymore, not even his fellow comrades. All he knows is that it may be his last day alive. The movie is directed by Ketan Mehta starring Aamir Khan as Mangal Pandey. The film was released on the 5th of September, 2014. The movie has gained mostly positive reviews from both critics and viewers alike. It does not stray away from the real events that lead up to the uprising and gives us a glimpse of what led our country to this day in history. Ketan Mehta (director) and Ranjit Kapur (writer) joined hands in order to make this movie. Ketan Mehta stated: "I grew up in a place called Gwalior where the idea of 1857 revolt still has a presence in everyday lives". That's why when Ranjit Kapur approached him with the project, he was ready for it. "The period immediately preceding events like the uprising is very important because it laid the time for things like that to happen", he adds. The movie also shows how corruption and greed were major reasons that led up to such an uprising. It is seen as a catalyst for what was to come afterwards. When it came to casting, the biggest challenge was the role of Mangal Pandey – a very famous figure in history who has been portrayed many times before. When Ranjit Kapur first wrote the script, he pictured Aamir Khan in that role. However, Aamir initially showed no interest and so other actors were considered for the role. However, as the shoot date approached, Aamir started getting interested and decided to be part of it. Talking about this decision, he said: " This is the kind of film that if you sit out on it you will regret it". The movie also has R. Madhavan, Jackie Shroff, Sakshi Tanwar and Rajkummar Rao in supporting roles. The movie devotes most of its screen time to the lead character Mangal Pandey, whom it portrays as a patriotic soldier who upholds the honor of his country, even at the cost of his own life. The rebellion itself received mostly positive reviews from critics however they were not very impressed by what seemed to be very little conflict between British soldiers and Indian rebels. However, this is an incorrect impression as many historians have argued that the actual number was much higher than what has been told here. cfa1e77820
